After 15 years as a licensed esthetician, I hear this almost weekly: "I bought this $80 serum and I'm not seeing any results."
Nine times out of ten, it's not the serum. It's how you're using it.
Serums are the powerhouses of your routine - they contain the highest concentration of active ingredients in the smallest molecules. But they're also the most sensitive to how, when, and where you apply them. Get it wrong and you're essentially pouring money down the drain.
Here are the five most common reasons your serum isn't delivering, and exactly how to fix each one.
1. You're Applying It in the Wrong Order
Skincare should always be applied thinnest to thickest. Serums go after cleansing and before moisturizer. If you're putting your serum on top of a heavy cream, those active ingredients can't penetrate through the barrier your moisturizer already created.
The correct order:
- Cleanser
- Serum (on slightly damp skin - this is key)
- Moisturizer
- SPF (morning only)
Applying serum to damp skin increases absorption by up to 10x because water helps carry ingredients deeper into your epidermis.
2. Your Skin Isn't Properly Cleansed
Remember the 60-second cleansing rule? If you're doing a 10-second face wash and then applying serum, those active ingredients are fighting through a layer of residual oil, dead skin, and environmental debris.
Your serum can only penetrate clean skin. A proper 60-second cleanse with an exfoliating cleanser like our Bright & Early Cleanser creates a clean canvas for your serum to actually work.
3. You're Not Giving It Enough Time
This is the big one. Most serums need 8-12 weeks of consistent daily use before you see significant results. Most people quit at week 3 or 4.
Here's a realistic timeline:
- Vitamin C: 4-8 weeks for brightening, 12+ weeks for dark spots
- Hyaluronic acid: Immediate hydration, but 4-6 weeks for plumping
- Niacinamide: 4-8 weeks for pore reduction and tone evening
- Retinol: 12-16 weeks for anti-aging results (with an adjustment period)
If you're swapping serums every two weeks because you're not seeing instant results, you'll never see results. Pick one. Commit to 90 days.
4. Your Moisturizer Is Blocking It
Not all moisturizers play well with serums. Heavy silicone-based creams can create a barrier that traps your serum on the surface instead of letting it sink in.
Look for a moisturizer that seals in your serum without blocking it. Ingredients like ceramides, squalane, and hyaluronic acid in your moisturizer actually help pull your serum deeper. Our Glacial Moisturizer is specifically formulated to layer over serums and lock them in.
5. You're Using the Wrong Serum for Your Concern
This is where a lot of people go wrong. They buy whatever's trending on TikTok instead of matching the serum to their actual skin concern:
- Dullness/dark spots - Vitamin C
- Dehydration/fine lines - Hyaluronic acid
- Large pores/redness - Niacinamide
- Acne/texture - Salicylic acid or retinol
- Anti-aging - Retinol or peptides
The main goal of our VC Serum is antioxidant protection but it does so much more like boosts collagen, brightens and improves skin texture (just to name a few) - which is exactly why I formulated it that way. One serum, multiple benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two serums at once?
You can, but layer them thinnest to thickest and don't exceed two. Too many actives at once can irritate skin. If you're not sure, start with one.
Does it matter what time of day I apply serum?
Yes. Vitamin C and antioxidant serums work best in the morning (they protect against daytime damage). Retinol and repair serums work best at night (your skin regenerates while you sleep).
Should I apply serum to my neck too?
Always. Your neck shows age faster than your face, and most people completely neglect it.
