One of the most common questions I get from clients is "What order do I put everything on?" (I've been asked it hundreds of times over 15 years)
Let me make this simple...
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
If you remember nothing else from this article, remember this: apply products from thinnest consistency to thickest.
Why? Thin, water-based products contain small molecules that need to reach your skin first. If you apply a thick cream first, those small molecules can't penetrate through the barrier. Your serum ends up sitting on top of your moisturizer, doing nothing.
Morning Routine Order (4 Steps)
Step 1: Cleanser
Start with a clean canvas. Use the 60-second cleansing rule to properly dissolve overnight oil and debris. Our Bright & Early Cleanser wakes up your skin with triple-acid exfoliation.
Step 2: Serum
Apply to slightly damp skin (not dripping and not bone dry). Damp skin absorbs serum up to 10x better. Our Supernal Serum quenches dry, dehydrated or acne-prone skin and layers perfectly under moisturizer and makeup and supports skin barrier recovery.
Step 3: Moisturizer
Seals in your serum and provides barrier protection. Our Glacial Moisturizer locks in hydration without feeling heavy and provides antioxidant protection against daily stressors.
Step 4: SPF
Always last in skincare, before makeup. SPF provides broad-spectrum protection with zero white cast.
That's four steps in the morning. Simple, fast, effective.
Step 5: Retinol (evening only)
At night, replace SPF with retinol as your final step. Our Retinol Mafia promotes cell turnover and collagen production while you sleep.
Evening Routine Order (5 Steps)
- Cleanser (60-second rule - extra important at night to remove the day)
- Serum
- Moisturizer
- Retinol (2-3 nights per week to start, building to nightly)
No SPF at night - your skin doesn't need UV protection while you sleep.
Wait Times Between Products
This is where people overcomplicate things. You don't need to wait 20 minutes between each product. Here's the reality:
- After cleansing: Apply serum within 60 seconds while skin is still slightly damp
- After serum: Wait 30 seconds, then apply moisturizer
- After moisturizer: Wait 1-2 minutes, then apply SPF
- After SPF: Wait 2-3 minutes before makeup
Total routine time: under 5 minutes.
Common Layering Mistakes
SPF before moisturizer. SPF should always be the last skincare step. It needs to form an even film on the surface to work properly.
Mixing Vitamin C and niacinamide at the same time. While newer research suggests this is fine, some people experience flushing. If that's you, use Vitamin C in the morning and niacinamide at night.
Applying retinol on damp skin. Unlike serums, retinol should go on completely dry skin. Damp skin increases absorption, which sounds good but can cause irritation with retinol.
Skipping moisturizer because you have oily skin. Oily skin still needs a moisturizer. Without it, your skin overproduces oil to compensate. Use a lightweight moisturizer instead of a heavy one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does toner go in the routine?
After cleansing, before serum. Toner is optional in a well-formulated routine, our 5-step system doesn't require one.
Can I mix serum into my moisturizer to save time?
You can, but you'll dilute the serum's concentration and reduce its effectiveness. It takes 30 extra seconds to apply them separately, TOTALLY worth it.
What about face oils - where do those go?
After moisturizer. Oils are occlusive, meaning they seal everything in. If you apply oil before serum or moisturizer, nothing else penetrates.
